Geboren wurde Eberhard Jüngel am 5. Dezember 1934 in Magdeburg. Er studierte evangelische Theologie an den Kirchlichen Hochschulen in Naumburg/Saale und Berlin (prägend vor allem Ernst Fuchs, aber auch Heinrich Vogel) und setzte seine Studien an den Universitäten Zürich (vor allem bei Gerhard Ebeling) und Basel (vor allem bei Karl Barth) fort.
