Emancipation Day is a holiday observed on the first day of January to commemorate the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. The Proclamation, which President Abraham Lincoln issued on January 1st, 1863, ordered the immediate emancipation, or freedom, of all enslaved people living in territories controlled by the Confederate States of America.
Emancipation Day celebrates the freedom of slaves, and particularly President Lincoln’s efforts, and eventual success, to end slavery. The holiday celebration was recognized from 1866 to 1901 then was somehow forgotten. The District of Columbia officially celebrates Emancipation Day on April 16th.
